About

The Castellers

Contemplating a “Castellers” presentation, better yet, participating in this singular experience permits the observer to understand the struggle to surmount both individually and collectively, the forces to achieve an objective, the solidarity and the inclusion of all people…of all ages, conditions and capacity, beneath the same project. For all members, a fondness which moves their passion, pride and challenge of teamwork.

History of “els Castellers”

The practice of “els Castells”, originating in the Catalonian province of Tarragona, with its birthplace in the epicenter of Valls, has of late experienced a period of great expansion. The embrace of this festive spirit by diverse populations within Catalonia and beyond, has resulted in as many as 8.000 Castells per year, around the world.
Born at the end of the 18thC & start of the 19thC in Valls (100km from BCN), it was derived from the “Valencians Dance”, which finished with a human tower. The and half of the 19thC was its Golden Era, in which 9 levels were achieved. By the 20thC, its popularity began to decline, almost disappearing until its resurgence in 1926, with the appearance of “Colles” beyond Valls.
At the end of the 70´s, with the return of democracy to Spain and the autonomy of Catalonia within Spain, “els Castells” has experienced a renaisance & popularity explosion since the 90´s with “Colles” throught the country & beyond.

Organization of “les Colles”

“Les Colles Castelleres” are shaped by all types of people…irregardless of age, gender, orientation, physical-mental capabilities, education, civial and or social status. It´s an all inclusive inter-generational & amateur activity in which, all can and are invited to participate.
The directive structure is organized into 2 parts, both elected by member votation.
>Administrative: led by its President, responsible for governance & management.
>Technical: led by the Head of the Colla, responsible for tower´s formation…who goes up and to which level, who forms “la pinya” support base structure and the direction of the structures execution. In general, rehearsal is twice a week from March-November.

Casteller Teams

They are opening their venues for the first time for outsiders to participate in one of the most unbelievable experiences.

“go BEYOND BARCELONA” is particularly interested in introducing the castellers with the maximum respect for their work, and with the illusion that the world will enjoy the experience and feel what the castellers feel.

Castellers de la Vila de Gràcia

In Barcelona

In Barcelona, in the center of the Barrio de Gracia, inside the Abert Musons Cultural Spaice. Our training sesions are inside Albert Musons Cultural Spaice. We are a colla of 200 people, that from historical references at the end of XIX century, we are one of the most Antique “colles” in Catalunya. La Vila de Gràcia (Gràcia Village) was a litle village situated close to Barcelona, it was a traditional workshop village, and with a popular ambiance. Since 2001 “La colla de la Vila de Gràcia” organized the decoration in the Vila de Gràcia Square on the annual festival where thousands of people come to enjoy the different decorations on the streets in all the Gràcia neibourghood, this popular festival runs from August from 15th to 21th. During the year, the castellers work with magic to achieve their objective : build “castells” (castles) that give them the oportunity to “touch the sky” during some seconds.

Castellers de la Sagrada Familia
Castellers de la Sagrada Familia

In Barcelona

We are located in a intimate passage in front of the Sant Pau Hospital. The “colla” was born in the autumn of 2000, when we contacted the Claror Foundation and the Sagrada Familia´s neighbords, proposing to create a “colla”. Our proposal was successful, and a hundred people came to our training sessions. We managed to be the 6th “colla” in Barcelona. Back in those days, people in the “colla” were inexperienced, there were onnly 5 or 6 people who knew about “tecnichal castles” and they taught others the “art of doing castles”. Most likely because of that situation, it took us a full year to perform our first castle. During that year, we practiced one day per week on the Street, as did not have a place to practice. We are now a colla of 120 people, remembering the forces 6 of our beginning, overcoming many obstacles along the way and tasting the success that we have obtained.

Castellers de Molins de Rei
Castellers de Molins de Rei

25 Minutes from Barcelona

Molins de Rei (25 min. from Barcelona) Our training sessions are done in a historical and great modernist building which was completely remodeled and is now a Cultural Spaice. The building where we rehearse, designed by the great modernist architect César Martinell from Valls, was opened in 1922. “Molins” in Catalan language means Mills. Before the existence of those Mills we could found ancient texts were this area of the Llobregat river was named “Vila de Matoses”, it was named this way for the predominant vegetation (“Matossar” is the catalan word for thicket). We are “MATOSSERS” from the “matossar” (THICKETERS!!??). Our shirt, brown like the clay, evokes the colour of the stone from the 15 arches bridge, a distinctly local landmark, which until 1971 connected the two banks of the Llobregat in Molins de Rei. A bridge is a symbol in itself because it facilitates the passage of people, wherever they come from. Thus, with a single element, the colour of our shirt, we represent two apparent opposite ideas: be proud of our roots, but also our open mind and inclusive character. In our group you can find people of all ages and not just from Molins de Rei, also from many other towns and cities.
